A USAR task force uses a wide range of specialist equipment such as Fibre-optic cameras, acoustic listening devises, heavy lifting gear, core drilling and concrete cutting equipment. A team will apply a wide range of skills in tunneling and shoring techniques to locate, stabilize and free trapped persons.
Most of Sturt's senior members are accredited with USAR Category 1, with some of those members trained in Breathing Apparatus and Confined Space. These members are currently in training focusing on vertical rescue, shoring, and USAR skills, in order to attend a USAR Category 2 course in the near future, to potentially become part of a state task force. Already, 4 members of Sturt have attended and completed the SA USAR Category 2 course enhancing Sturt's response capability and knowledge. Some of the equipment Sturt has includes:
